A Food Lover's Guide to Varanasi: 5 Local Street Food Spots You Cannot Miss

calendar_todayJuly 5, 2026schedule6 Min Read
A rustic street cart in Varanasi serving hot kachoris, syrupy jalebis, and kulhad chai.

Varanasi is well known for its street food. The local food culture has been established over many decades by local halwais (confectioners).

If you are visiting Varanasi, you can find many of these shops in the narrow alleys (galis).

Shri Geeta Sarees is located in Govindpura, close to several popular food spots. Here is a list of recommended local food vendors.

1. Kachori & Jalebi

A standard local breakfast consists of Kachori (fried dough) served with gravy, often followed by sweet Jalebis. There are different types of kachoris available at different shops.

  • Ram Bhandar (in Thatheri Bazaar): Known for the classic kachori served with aloo sabzi (potato gravy) and hot jalebis.
  • Neelu Kachori: A local favorite specifically known for its gol kachori (round kachori) served with chana (chickpea gravy).
  • Local Tip: These shops typically sell out of breakfast by 9:30 AM.

2. Chaat

Varanasi has a specific style of Chaat. Two common varieties are Tamatar Chaat (mashed tomatoes served in an earthen bowl) and Palak Patta Chaat (fried spinach leaves with yogurt and chutneys).

  • Where to go: Deena Keshari Chaat Bhandar (specifically the location near Chowk Thana).
  • Local Tip: Stir the Tamatar Chaat well before eating to mix the spices.

3. Malaiyyo

Malaiyyo is a milk dessert made by churning raw milk that has been left outside overnight to collect dew. It is flavored with saffron and cardamom. It is only available during the winter (November to early March).

  • Where to go: Shree Ji in Chowk area is specifically known for the best Malaiyyo in the city.

4. Lassi

Yogurt drinks (Lassi) are common in the city.

  • Where to go: Raja Ram Lassi. This is a popular spot among locals rather than tourists.
  • What to order: The standard sweet Lassi topped with fresh malai (clotted cream) served in a clay cup.

5. Banarasi Paan

The Banarasi Paan is a betel leaf preparation containing areca nut, slaked lime, and various sweet ingredients (meetha paan).

  • Where to go: Keshav Paan Bhandar (located in Lanka).
  • Local Tip: Order a "Meetha Paan" (sweet paan) if you do not consume tobacco.

Local Area

Many of these food locations are in the Chowk and Govindpura districts. If you are in this area, you can also visit the Shri Geeta Sarees handloom showroom to see pure silk Banarasi sarees.
