A Foreigner's Guide to Varanasi: Safety, Etiquette & Things to Know

Varanasi (also known as Kashi or Banaras) is arguably the most intense, spiritual, and culturally overwhelming city in India. For a foreign tourist, stepping into its ancient, labyrinthine alleys (galis) can feel like stepping back in time.

While the city is generally safe for international travelers, the sheer volume of crowds, cows, sounds, and religious rituals can be a culture shock.

Here is a comprehensive guide on safety, etiquette, and essential things to know to ensure your trip to Varanasi is deeply rewarding.

1. Cultural Etiquette & Dress Code

Varanasi is one of the holiest cities in Hinduism. Modesty and respect are paramount.

  • What to Wear: Both men and women should dress conservatively. Shoulders and knees must be covered, especially when visiting temples or walking along the ghats. Loose, breathable cotton clothing is ideal for the heat.
  • Footwear: You will be required to take off your shoes before entering any temple, and sometimes even in small shops or restaurants. Wear sandals that are easy to slip on and off.
  • Public Behavior: Public displays of affection (kissing, hugging) are frowned upon. Always use your right hand for eating and giving/receiving items, as the left hand is considered unclean in Indian culture.

2. Navigating the Ghats & Photography Rules

The Ghats (the stone steps leading down to the River Ganges) are the heartbeat of the city.

  • Manikarnika Ghat (The Cremation Ghat): This is the primary cremation site in the city. Funerals operate 24/7. It is a profoundly sacred space. Do not take photographs of the funeral pyres. It is highly disrespectful. Be quiet, observe respectfully from a distance, and ignore anyone aggressively demanding "wood money" (donations for the pyres), which is a common tourist scam.
  • Ganga Aarti: The evening fire ritual at Dashashwamedh Ghat is a must-see. It gets incredibly crowded, so arrive at least 45 minutes early if you want a seat on the steps, or hire a boat to watch it from the water.

3. Health, Hygiene & Safety

  • Water: Never drink tap water. Only consume sealed, bottled mineral water (and use it to brush your teeth). Avoid ice in your drinks unless you are at a high-end hotel.
  • Street Food: Varanasi has incredible street food, but foreign stomachs may take time to adjust. Stick to busy stalls where the food is cooked fresh in front of you. Avoid raw salads or pre-cut fruits.
  • The Alleys (Galis): The old city is a maze of incredibly narrow alleys shared with pedestrians, motorcycles, and cows. Always give the right of way to cows. If a motorcycle honks, just step to the side.

4. Shopping in the Old City

Shopping in Varanasi is an incredible experience, particularly for hand-woven textiles and brassware. However, be cautious of street touts who offer to act as "free guides" to silk factories.

For an authentic, scam-free shopping experience, we highly recommend walking into the Chowk and Govindpura areas. This is the traditional textile heart of the city. Here, you will find Shri Geeta Sarees, our heritage handloom showroom.

We welcome international visitors to sit down, enjoy a cup of chai, and learn about the intricate Kadhua weaving process without any pressure to buy. It is a wonderful way to experience authentic local hospitality and witness the true artistry of Banaras in a safe, fixed-price environment.

Varanasi will challenge you, but if you approach it with an open mind, respect, and a bit of patience, it will be one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life.
