Buying Authentic Banarasi Silk: A Guide to Varanasi’s Heritage Handlooms

Varanasi is world-famous for two things: its deeply spiritual ghats along the Ganges, and its centuries-old tradition of handloom Banarasi silk weaving.
For generations, the master weavers of this city have crafted heirlooms—sarees woven with pure silk and real zari that are passed down from mother to daughter. However, as an international traveler visiting the city, finding a beautiful, authentic silk souvenir requires knowing where to look.
This guide will explain the heritage of true Banarasi weaving and how you can safely explore authentic, fairly-priced handlooms.
The Legacy of Authentic Banarasi Weaving
True Banarasi weaving is an art form that takes weeks, sometimes months, to complete. Premium sarees, such as those crafted using the intricate Kadhua technique (where motifs are individually woven into the fabric without loose threads on the back), represent the pinnacle of Indian handloom luxury.
When you purchase an authentic Banarasi saree, you are not just buying fabric; you are investing in a piece of Varanasi's history.
Where to Buy Authentic Silk Safely
For over 60 years, Shri Geeta Sarees has been one of Varanasi’s most trusted names in authentic handloom weaving. Located in the historic Govindpura area (near Chowk Thana), our showroom offers a peaceful, pressure-free environment for both domestic and international visitors.
- 100% Pure Silk: We specialize in genuine, pure handloom silk weaves. We are happy to explain the weaving process and help you identify the quality of the fabric.
- Fixed Pricing: Every piece in our store has a fixed, transparent price tag. We believe in honest pricing for the exquisite artistry of our weavers.
- No Touts, No Commissions: We do not work with street guides or rickshaw drivers. This means our prices are honest and free of inflated commission margins.
We invite you to step away from the chaotic streets and spend a quiet afternoon browsing our heritage collection. Whether you are looking for a grand bridal saree, a lightweight silk scarf, or a beautiful dupatta to take back home, we ensure you leave with an authentic piece of Varanasi's history.
Important Note: How to Spot Fake Silk
If you are exploring other areas of the city, it is important to be cautious. Unfortunately, the streets near the ghats are filled with touts and auto-rickshaw drivers who offer to take tourists to a "local silk factory." These are often commission-based traps that sell "art silk" (polyester) at highly inflated prices.
To test the authenticity of a Banarasi saree anywhere you go:
- The Burn Test: Ask the shopkeeper to pull a single loose thread from the edge of the fabric and burn it. Pure silk is a natural protein. It will burn slowly, smell exactly like burning hair, and leave behind a brittle black ash. Artificial silk is plastic; it will melt, smell like burning chemicals, and leave a hard plastic bead.
- Check the Reverse Side: Authentic handloom Banarasi sarees have distinct weaving patterns on the back. If you are buying a premium Kadhua weave, the back of the fabric should be perfectly clean with no loose threads connecting the designs.
